As of August 8, 2024, NASA has confirmed that astronauts Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams, who launched on Boeing's Starliner spacecraft on June 5, 2024, may not return until February 2025. The delay is due to ongoing issues with the Starliner’s propulsion system and other technical difficulties that have emerged since their launch.
Wilmore and Williams have been orbiting the Earth for nearly two months. Initially, the mission was set to last eight days, but the spacecraft encountered significant problems as it approached the International Space Station (ISS), including leaks in the propulsion system.
If Boeing's Starliner does not become operational in time, NASA plans to return the astronauts using SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft. This adjustment would ensure their safe return while addressing the ongoing issues with the Starliner.
